soap making

4th of July Soap

Several years ago my family and I went to Schlitterbahn, in New Braunfels, TX. It was a long drive to get there, but it was a fun experience overall. It is a multi location water park that has a slide that ends in the Comal River. Some of the attractions were a little too scary for me, especially because I had an oversize tube, and I came out of it while sliding down. It was a 4th of July, and after a day in the water, we went to a nearby field to watch the fireworks.

It felt almost like a family picnic, though I don’t recall if we had any food. If there had been any food, tradition usually dictates it needed to be burgers or hot dogs.

Which brings us to this soap, in which I wanted to highlight both the fireworks and the grilling activity associated with it. I used neon pigments so that under UV light they could resemble fireworks better.

I did have to make the soap twice because my first attempt did not work out as well as I had planned. Below are the recipe and colorants for the second attempt (bottom one).

My first attempt was with Blackberry Ambrosia, which seemed to have accelerated the soap batter for me. In reading the reviews, someone suggested not using a water discount with this fragrance, so perhaps that was why. Most fragrances that are supposed to behave well with most soaps tend to trace fast for me, because of my recipe and water content. So, for my second attempt I used a fragrance that is known to “slow trace”, and it worked out a lot better. (Cucumber melon from Nature’s Garden)
