soap making

One Pot Wonder: First attempt

I am sure that the name for this challenge, meant to use the word “wonder” as a noun. However, after making the first soap, I started using it as a verb. I “wonder” where my gold mica drizzle went…I wonder why there was uneven temperature, and if it was not the temperature, what caused the deep soda ash inside the bars (or is it uneven crystallization?) I wonder why it cracked if it was not insulated…..Was it the fragrance oil? I did not think I was making the soap at low temperatures, I thought the oils were above 100, but I will check the video to make sure.

I blame the fragrance oil for the overheating and cracking on top. It was already misbehaving when I was pouring it into the one pot, it got thick quite fast. It does compensate on this for being a pleasant fragrance though.

Yesterday at the facebook live stream Amy said the technique works best if your “pot” or pitcher is narrow, as that forces the colors to come out together better. She also said the wall pour inside said pot should be done close to the pouring lip of it. I did the latter, however, my pouring pot was kind of wide, and that perhaps contributed to my lack of success. I look forward to trying this technique on the future though. It is kind of simple but results in a cool design. (If things go well, they didn’t quite go well for me, but I love the colors)

The colors were suggested by my hubby, since they are the colors of his ipad background image:

I decided to avoid the red since it would not make too much contrast with the pink. Below is how the bars turned out; while I like the colors, I did not achieve the feathering effect for the challenge, and I believe this was because of my pouring vessel width. (I use the white mixing bowl that is commonly found at Dollar Tree Stores)

Equipment and Supplies (some of the links are affiliate links*):

Equipment:

Here is a link to the standard equipment I use.

Mold:

12″ Tall and Skinny Mold

Colorants:

1/2 tsp Turquoise Teal from WSP

1/2 tsp Hollywood Pink Mica + 1/8 tsp Pink Neon mica from Make your own dispersed in light colored olive oil prior

1/4 tsp of Fluorescent Neon Purple from Nurture Soap+ 1/8 tsp Kashmir Mica (Blue) from Nurture Soap dispersed in light colored olive oil prior

I also used gold mica for a drizzle, but since that is mostly nonexistent in the soap, I do not think it matters to list it!

Fragrance:

2 oz Coconut Lime Verbena
