Puzzled by Vegan Cosmetics

neon soap aurora borealis theme

I often wonder why so many cosmetics and soaps are vegan. Considering that only 0.50% of the populations is vegan in the US. Is this 0.50% of the population consuming all of these cosmetic products? Mathematically it would not make sense if that was so.

Or is it that people prefer selling/ buying vegan products because although they cannot give up on eating meat, they can give up on buying cosmetics made with animal products?

I live in Texas, a steak country, and I am neither vegan nor vegetarian (I did tried going vegetarian as a child after watching Finding Nemo and Chicken Little, unfortunately, I did not stay that way for long.) However, with the understanding that the animal fat used in cosmetics is usually a byproduct of the meat industry; it makes more sense to me to use those products in cosmetics or soaps. If an animal is farmed for its meat, would it not make sense to use its fat instead of it being thrown away?

My intention is not to debate or judge whether someone eats or avoids a certain food or the other, I am sure each person has a reason for it (though it would be nice if humans stop eating bats!). Rather, I would like to know the reasoning behind making or buying vegan products; especially if you are not vegan yourself.

I thought Marie’s blog post of using tallow on her soaps, though she is a vegetarian, made a lot of sense to me.

Would love to hear your thoughts on this!
