When I was told the name of this collaboration, Summer Sunshine, my mind immediately went to the song “You are my sunshine”. It is one of my favorite songs. I heard it for the first time while watching Star Trek with my husband a few years ago. I know the song is older, but I did not grow up on the States so I was not exposed to it. If you want to hear/see the part of the episode is here. A little intro: the guy you will see is the doctor, the lady’s name is Seven. They are in space, and though Seven is human she has lost touch with her humanity (for reasons too long to explain here) and behaves like a robot of sorts. The doctor is teaching her human ways.
Sadly though, I could not get inspired by the song. So I turned to my soap idea list and found this sketch:

It is a sketch of the Litte Prince with the fox in his planet, whilst watching a sunset.
If you have not read The Little Prince book, by the way, may I encourage you to do so? It has been voted as the best book of the 20th century in France, and it is one of the best selling and most translated books ever published. But ratings aside, it is one of my favorite books, it is a short and easy read, since it is a children’s book, but a lot of adults will find the deeper meaning in the pages.
Going back to the first sketch, I was not sure if it was accurate. I was not sure if he was with the fox on his planet (which was about the size of house). So I revisited the book and realized that he met the fox when he was visiting Earth, so I made another sketch that looked like this:

I included a sun for the theme of the collaboration, Summer Sunshine, and also because it confirmed something the fox told him when he explained to him the meaning of being tamed:
“My life is very monotonous,” the fox said. “I hunt chickens; men hunt me. All the chickens are just alike, and all the men are just alike. And, in consequence, I am a little bored. But if you tame me, it will be as if the sun came to shine on my life. I shall know the sound of a step that will be different from all the others. Other steps send me hurrying back underneath the ground. Yours will call me, like music, out of my burrow.”
The Little Prince Copyright and Painting the Soap
The copyright law depends mostly on where you live; in the USA, it is still under protected copyright until January 1, 2039, per this article. However, in other countries it is now in the public domain. In France, however, the author’s native country, it will be in the public domain in a similar time frame, per this site.
Because of the above, I only painted a couple of bars that I plan to gift to family and friends. I used face paints to do it, which turned out to be easier than mixing micas with alcohol. I used alcohol though, to activate the face paints, which work as water colors.
A good and affordable starter set for this could be this Snazaroo palette.
This is the recipe that I used and below that there is a link to the video with the process.
